This is a must see for anyone interested in learning about the Mayan art and architecture. Frederick Catherwood was an intrepid English explorer who in 1839 along with his partner John Lloyd Stephens. After reading the account of the ruins of Copán published by Juan Galindo, they decided to visit Central America in order to complete this documentation with details and illustrations. The expeditionaries reached their target in 1839 and remained together for the next years, visiting and documenting dozens of ruins, many for the first time. Those illustrations, made by Catherwood, are on exhibit today in this small gallery.
The Casa Frederick Cathewood is located in the Santiago neighborhood in downtown. Its convenient location and cultural importance makes it a must for cultural visitors. Casa Catherwood is close to the Santiago Park, where there is live music every Tuesday. You may have to ask for directions, however it is not that hard to find.
